"So I made up some updated slides, drew (horribly) a copy of the Stela of Mereri on poster board and proceeded to teach..."
Using this book as the primary source a the time, I created a set of slides that covered the basic of Egyptology and the Egyptian language. From there I went into teaching the student how to read the Stela of Mereri. Its a fairly easy one to ready because it is short and self contained. many hieroglyphs are huge, on walls and highly detailed. This was more like a "See Dick run..." kind of stela.
At the end of the instruction (and throughout) I took questions and we discussed the content and where someone could learn more. I also talked about other resources such as Dictionary of Middle Egyptian by Paul Dickson published in 2006. On that note, some other good resources are "A Hieroglyphic Vocabulary to the Theban recension of the Book of the Dead" by Ernest Alfred Wallis Budge (1911) and "A Concise Dictionary of Middle Egyptian by Robert O. Faulkner (1988) are good one to start with. In the end I was happy with my classes and hope to do more in the future. I like doing them in person and get inspired each time as enthusiasm grows. |
